What a Christmas Surprise!

If you have been reading my blog, you know I had a very heart breaking episode having to put my Yellow Lab down when she developed Lymphoma in September. I have been doing alright, but having some tough days missing her soooo badly. I mention this to my husband, and also mentioned how as a child I would beg and plead my parents to get me a Golden Retriever puppy. I would read the want ads and show them, but they would not budge. Fast forward 30 years, my husband shocked my two sons and I with a wonderful Golden Retriever pup. We have named her Sadie Lou Who. It just seems to fit her. We had watched the Grinch the night before and it stuck (yes, I know it was "Cindy Lou Who" we just like Sadie better). My kids said I had an, "extreme home makeover" reaction. Yes, I cried it was like being handed a baby you have been wanting for so long. She is just wonderful and she even knows sit, down and come already, what a smarty pants!

New Supplies

I met the nicest person this weekend while out hunting for good junk. I really found some too. The great news is she also has an etsy store. Here are some of the wonderful primitive items she has that can be incorporated into mixed media art. I just love these vintage number tags. I have already used a couple in my jewelry and they look great. You can check out her etsy shop at www.turtlescreek.etsy.com

Domino Tutorial Finally

"1 Quart Everfix Epoxy Resin 100643"
Here is it finally. I am sorry I took so long to get this done. If I need to clarify anything just email me your questions.

Domino Tutorial

Materials-dominoes, background papers, focal image, white glue, packing tape, 2 part epoxy resin ( I used Little Windows brand), flat back Swarovski crystals, E-6000 glue, flat backed bails, diamond glaze adhesive/sealer,
Bird images ( I used some from Lisa’s altered art) her link is
http://www.lisasalteredart.com/index.htm

Process- Glue background paper to flat side of domino with
Diamond Glaze, then trim away excess paper. Next, the focal image needs to be sealed by either sandwiching the image between two pieces of packing tape, or brushing white glue over the front, back and sides of the image. If sealed with tape, be sure to run white glue around the edges after the excess tape has been trimmed away. This step is necessary to keep the image from becoming transparent when the resin comes into contact with it. The image can now be glued down to the domino using the Diamond Glaze. Burnish down with your finger to make sure there are no ripples. You can now add further embellishments. I use Diamond Glaze to adhere the flat crystals and watch gears. Allow the glue to dry.

After preparing several dominoes mix your epoxy resin according to the manufacturers directions. Place domino on a non-stick surface such as a craft sheet or waxed paper. Slowly pour the epoxy resin down the center of the domino, then take your stir stick and gently push the resin out to the edges of the domino without running over the edges. Continue until all of the dominoes have been covered with the resin. Place a domed cover over the dominoes to protect from dust. In twelve hours dominoes will cure. To make the domino into a pendant a flat backed bail can now be glued onto the back of the domino with E-6000 glue. Allow the glue to cure for 48hrs for the best bond. If preferred a hole can be drilled into the top of the domino and a cord can be strung through.

Epoxy resin info

For these dominoes I used Little Windows resin. I found it to be very easy to use and had no perceivable odor. I never had a batch not cure or any trouble at all. I have tried other brands and did have some that did not cure correctly. It can be found here
https://www.little-windows.com/makeyourown.php

Now with all of that being said, if you do end up purchasing from Little Windows there is a referral program there that allows you to put the name of the person of sent you there and then they give a web credit. I would appreciate it that you tell her Denise Moore sent you. I don’t think I will ever get tired of playing around with it.

Look here to see more pictures of these dominoes from an older post.

Please email me if you need more info.

Queen Bee Steampunk Necklace

I have been holding onto some old pocket watch faces, not sure how I wanted to use them. I was playing around with some of my metal stampings and thought this looked kinda fun, the Queen Bee. I found a some new silver colored chain that sparkles so nicely. So I strung them all up together for this necklace.

I also made a new caged bird necklace. This one I added some of my new crystal ball beads. I love these! I have them in white, pink and blue, and then I have a silver color as well as a black oxidized color. I could easily hoard these and not want to use them, but I let a couple go for this new necklace.

Transformers Halloween Costume

I have always loved dressing up for Halloween. As a kid I spent many nights working on elaborate costume like Super Chicken and a very authentic Gumby that I wore in college. The Gumby costume netted my quite a few contest prizes. My friends toted me from bar to bar entering as many contests in one night as possible. The downside was it was very difficult to go to the bathroom, and it was highly flamable. I love watching the Today show and Regis & Kelly to see the costume contests. I found this amazing Transformers costume on YouTube someone took a loooong time on this one. See it here.

Time to say goodbye to a wonderful friend

I have not posted in about a month after promising a tutorial for the dominoes. I am very sorry if any of you have been checking back and looking for the tutorial. I will get it on here, I promise. I got distracted and off track during this last month, but for a good reason. My sweet girl, Maddy, who I just posted the smiling photos of recently became sick during this past month. It started out pretty benign, she didn't seem to care for her food anymore. No problem I got a new bag of something that sounded like it would please her. She was only mildly interested in the new stuff and soon started having diarrhea. After two visits to the vet then an internist vet who did a colonoscopy we found out what the problem was after all. Maddy was diagnosed with high grade lymphoma and was getting progressively worse quickly. We had to say good bye to her this past Saturday. She was truly a member of our family and we are having a hard time not having her with us. She was my constant companion, getting used to this new reality not easy.

Polymer Clay Faux -Tique Pendants

I have been playing with my clay again. I made a huge mess of my kitchen. It seems I require lots of space to see all of the wonderful supplies I own. Here are some of the pendants that I created. I have been playing with paint and mica powders to achieve an antique or vintage style pendant. Now how to bead these up?

Do dogs smile?

I think if you are a dog owner you would say most definetly yes! My girl Maddy is getting a little old for a Lab. I can barely type those words. She is just such a joy to come home to. Always happy to see me and yes she always has a big smile for me.

Steampunk Dominoes

I have been busy making lots of dominoes. They are so much fun to make, I found these bird collage sheets in my stash and then found a bunch of watch parts I have been saving for something. I tried combining the two and came up with these dominoes. The gears and swarovski crystals give the birds some "bling".

New Nest Necklaces

Wow, say that title three times fast. It's a bit of a tongue twister. If you have been reading my blog at all you know I am a little bird crazy. I love all things about birds, their wings, nests and eggs. To me they really have a mother and child(ren) symbolism. So they are usually my subject matter of choice. It is not surprising that I would now make nest necklaces. Here are some photos of my newest colors. I have one for each of my outfits. The copper nest with the teal eggs is my favorite though.

Upcoming Artist Market

I am so excited to be a part of the upcoming Handmade Market at the Paisley Farmhouse in Milton, Ga. I dropped by the store this week to see what kind of offerings they had. Wow what a great store. They had the most wonderful home decor and great gift items. They had something for everyone you could possibly need to buy a gift for on your list. That night they have a movie under the stars after the show is over, it sounds like so much fun!
I am going to be selling my jewelry, art, and doing a demo making scrabble tile initial necklaces.
I hope to see you there!

Free Rice and Fun

My son came home from school and told me about a great website called "Free Rice." It is a site where you can play games and for every answer you get right 10 grains of rice are donated to feed the hungry. You don't have to sign up or give any info just go in a play a vocab game or one of the other subject areas. There are chemistry, math, art, and geography questions just to name a few of the subject areas. The sponsors of the site pay for the rice. I sent 620 grains of rice this morning and sharpened my aging brain a bit. You can get to the site here.

Overcoming Fear

I have sooo many fears there is not enough time or space to write them here. It would also be very boring too. I used to be deathly afraid of snakes, but in the last couple of years I have managed to meet it head on and actually can appreciate how unique a species they are now. ( I am still working on this though).
I recently got to go on vacation and zip lining in the rain forest was an optional outing for us. I really wanted to do this, until the night before it we were supposed to go. I got totally freaked out at the idea of being 150 ft in the air and one stretch was 800 ft long. OMG! I didn't sleep a wink the night before, but since my kids really wanted to do it we all acted very excited to be going and experiencing something totally foreign to us. Well I did it, although after about the 5th trip I was ready to say I was done. I should mention that there was no walking path back to the begining, and Boa Constrictors are native to the island. (So I still need to work on the snake thing). We stuck with it and I did all eleven zips and it really was exhilarating. It was a gorgeous area and I am sure I will never be able to do it again. I am so glad I was able to overcome this fear it makes me stronger to take on my next fear, I hope!

Working around the house

We have been putting off a lot of the projects around the house. They had a great sale at our local lighting store so we decided we wanted to change out the foyer light. The new light looks light wrought iron with antique copper highlights. We decided to add a medallion to the ceiling as well. I had to paint it to match (somewhat) with the chandelier. Here was the process. It had to be primed, then I painted it black, then added the copper to the areas I wanted, then glazed the whole thing with brown glaze. Here are the pictures of my progress then finally hanging w/ the new light. I was really not happy with it at first b/c I didn't think it matched well enough. Now, I am pretty happy with it. Either way it's staying.
